How to Travel Light

When you are on the go for audition season, rehearsals, or other singing functions, it can be hard to travel light. Today, airlines are adding additional fees to checked bags, so why not save a few bucks and travel light? One of the best ways to do this and save money is to bring a carry on bag, and only a carry on bag. Before you fly for your next trip, check out a few of my favorite travel hacks, and check out our Pinterest board for even more ideas and hacks on how to fly light.

Two bags only

Seriously! Only bring two bags with you: a personal item, like a large bag or purse, and a carry on bag. Your carry on bag should have all of your clothes and travel essentials, and your personal bag should have your music and any in flight essentials you may need. So what are in flight essentials? Check out the pins on our board to see a great list of things to bring with you:

Keep it under 3.4

Let's be honest. We all have lots of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and other liquids in our bags. They weigh a ton and take up so much room that it's hard to pack anything else in your bag. One of my favorite hacks is to put small liquids in a contact case. If you going on a short trip, put a few pumps into the container, and you are good to go. If you need something larger, find other small containers for your liquids. If the container you are using is 3.4 oz or under, you are safe to fly. You can buy containers at a drug store or even the grocery store.

Roll it up & get creative

Your carry on is not the biggest bag, so you don’t have a ton of space. Get familiar with rolling and packing creatively. Some items can be rolled into small balls, like socks, but don’t forget other items like jeans or shirts. If you aren’t a fan of rolling things, create other packing space in your suitcase. If you need some ideas, head to our pinterest board for lots of pins on how to pack creatively. My favorites are pictured below:

Make a list

If you are like me, you love to make a good list and check things off. When you are packing, you can do the same thing and write down what you need to put in your suitcase. If you don’t know where to start, take a look on our pinterest board for a few start up lists to help you out:
