Harry Potter and the Chamber of Fachs: Gryffindor

If you’re in your mid 20's like me, it’s more than likely JK Rowling’s Harry Potter put a spell on you in elementary and/or middle school. I’ll go back and re-read the books from time to time. Do you ever wonder which fachs match up with which characters? Wonder no more!

First up: Go, go, Gryffindor! When the books came out, everyone wanted to be a Gryffindor. While I align myself with Ravenclaw, hiding behind my book and cup of tea, I admire my Gryffindor friends’ daring and courageous attitudes. Here is a list of a few Gryffindors and their fachs:

"You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart
"

-The Sorting Hat, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Harry Potter – the Helden Tenor

Naturally, the protagonist/title character of the series would be a Heldentenor; the hero of heroic voices. The books follow Harry’s wizardly bildungsroman with twists and turns similar to that of a Wagnarian hero. Harry needs some seriously thick folds and an upper extension in order to fight He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

Hermione Granger – Lyric Mezzo Soprano

Smooth, sensitive, and worldly, Hermione could easily navigate below, and perhaps slightly above, the treble staff. Maybe Hermione’s skill in brewing Polyjuice potion will prepare her for her youthful transformation into a variety of pants roles. Clever, witty, and sharp as a tack, Hermione would most likely make her operatic debut as Rosina in The Barber of Seville with elegant cunning.

Ron Weasley – Bass

As Harry’s best friend and sidekick, Ron is a Bass, and a comic one at that. Paired with Harry’s soaring tenor, they would sing beautiful duets together. Ron’s initial bumbling nervousness, and fear of spiders, would lend itself well to roles such as Leporello in Don Giovanni. As he grows in the books, Ron takes on more of a heroic and suave persona, such as that of Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore.

Albus Dumbledore - Lyric Tenor

Everyone's favorite sage and headmaster could easily fill the seats of Covent Garden or the Met with his infectious yet quiet personality. He could easily pop out those nine C5s in "Ah! mes amis" from Donizetti's La fille du Regiment. He is everyone's hero, like Tamino, and would walk through the fire to save his loved ones- so long as he doesn't eat the dreaded Ear Wax Every Flavor Jelly Bean!

Neville Longbottom – Tenor Leggiero

Unsure of himself, yet filled with an infinite courage, Neville started the series as the brunt of everyone’s jokes. One could draw parallels to the naïve yet lovable Nemorino from L’elisir d’amore. He eventually proves himself to be worthy of Gryffindor multiple times, particularly as an original member of Dumbledore’s Army.

Fred and George Weasley – Comic Tenori

These two jokesters would naturally be the comic relief of any opera. Their sporty good looks from playing Quidditch, passion for anti-authoritarianism, and big hearts make them suitable for any Gilbert and Sullivan tenor role.

Ginny Weasley - Spinto Soprano

Ginny is one fierce witch. She can handle anything, which makes her the perfect Spinto Soprano. Ginny's intelligence, grace, and flexibility make her the perfect Verdi heroine and match for Harry the Heldentenor.

Arthur Weasley – Bass

Like father, like son. Arthur Weasley's obsession with Muggle life and technology, and his quirky worldiness go hand in hand with colorful roles such as Alidoro in Rossini's La Cenerentola.

Molly Weasley – Mezzo Soprano

Do not mess with Molly Weasley- the series' most lovable, and sometimes frightening, matriarch. She possesses the wit and bluntness of Carmen, and the gentleness and devotion of The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors.

Minerva McGonagall – Dramatic Coloratura Soprano

Professor McGonagall's specialty in Transfiguration allows her to be a vocal chameleon. Her agile, cat-like reflexes as well as her cunning and no-nonsense attitude resonate well with characters such as the Queen of the Night, Konstanza, and Violetta.
