The Graduating Singer's College Bucket List

Spring is here, and before we know it, the school year will be over! If you are a graduating singer, your time on campus is running out, so how can you make the most of their remaining weeks in school? Never fear, Modern Singer is here with a campus bucket list to help you take advantage of the days leading up to graduation.

  1. Ask a professor you admire but don't know very well to get coffee and talk about their career. You never know what words of wisdom they might impart.
  2. Browse for new music in your school's library. Take advantage of the musical resources you have now, and find a couple of new pieces you might want to learn after graduation.
  3. Go to a student recital, especially instrumental recitals. As a student, you have the luxury of seeing high-quality performers for free, so go hear some great music and support your colleagues!
  4. Have a jam session with your fellow music majors. Play through some pop hits in the practice room or have a Bach chorale sightreading session - it's way more fun than it sounds.
  5. Explore an academic building that you've never stepped foot in. Does the computer science building seem absolutely foreign to you? Walk around, see what students are doing, and invite them to check out the music building.
  6. Find a campus tradition you've never done and do it. You're not just a music student, you're a university student as well, and those campus traditions don't exist after college.
  7. Talk to an underclassman music major who you don't know very well. Find out what their musical, career, and college goals are, and talk to them about your experience at your school. Give them the tips and tricks they'll need to survive another few years.
  8. Have a practice session where you sing something in a completely new style. Have you never sung contemporary musical theatre? Gregorian chant? Country pop music? Find a song you like and try it out for kicks.
  9. Be a tourist in your city or on your campus. Hit all of the major sights that you forgot about as a student. Meet some visitors along the way and talk to them about your experience at your school. Go to a new restaurant in your school's town. Get off campus and explore the town or city where you've been living for the past few years.
  10. Compose a short piece of music or make a recording in your school's music lab. Take advantage of the technological resources university music programs provide before you have to finance recordings yourself.
  11. Attend a presentation, lecture, or demonstration in a department outside of the music school. Universities have so many different events going on, so use that opportunity to learn something brand new and see what other students are doing.
  12. Go out with your fellow singers and vocal majors. Find a fun, non-musical activity to do together where you don't have to stress about juries, operas, or graduation.

Congratulations to all of our graduating singers! Go out and do great things in the world, and have some fun on campus before you leave.
